May is nearly in the books as we head into the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day 2021 is sure to be far closer to normal than 2020 – thanks to the highly effective COVID-19 vaccines and millions of shots in arms of Americans. The CDC reports that 62% of individuals aged 18 and older are at least partially vaccinated. Across all vaccine-eligible age groups, 50% of the U.S. population has received one shot or more, with 40% fully vaccinated. For those not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated, CDC guidance on mask wearing and other precautions and state-specific level restrictions remain in place.
Looking for a refresher on why Memorial Day is observed? Hint – it’s not because it the unofficial start of summer and no you do not wish someone a “happy Memorial Day.”
Check out the PBS website or the USSA Memorial Day site for the history of this national day of remembrance of those who gave their lives for our country – and ways you can honor them!
