Memorials and Memories

Are Americans’ memories getting a bit fuzzy? Or did we miss a crucial lesson in history class?

According to a survey by USAA, conducted by Endeavor Analytics and YouGov, only 46% of U.S. adults correctly said that Memorial Day is about honoring military service members who lost their lives in conflicts. Even more telling, nearly half of those surveyed (45%) think it’s appropriate to wish a veteran a “Happy Memorial Day” or thank them for their service, confusing it with Veteran’s Day that honors all military veterans, living and deceased, for their service.

Avoid the Mixup
Here’s an easy way to avoid mixing up Memorial Day with Veterans Day. When we say “memorial,” think of it as a way to preserve memories—like a mental scrapbook capturing people or significant moments. Memorials serve to honor and keep alive the memory of those who have passed away or to commemorate important events that shaped our history.

Memories Front & Center
Memorial Day is one of the most powerful example of a mental scrapbook Across the country, many people will pay their respects for those who died in service by visiting cemeteries and memorials as well as joining parades. There is also National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time when a moment of silence is observed.

While Memorial Day is a day of deep significance and solemn remembrance, it’s also an opportunity to come together, enjoy each other’s company, and cherish the freedoms that our honored heroes fought to protect. It’s a time to create wonderful  memories that will last a lifetime!  Just as the Genie in Disney’s movie Aladdin wisely said, “Today’s Special Moments Are Tomorrow’s Memories.”
