Let’s use a proverb, one of those short sentences that people often quote to give advice or tell you something about life, to level-set other popular proverbs for real life situations!
There are so many proverbs offering advice for something few of us like to do — wait. Many of us have heard the saying “good things come to those who wait” or the popular proverb “patience is a virtue.” These proverbs can come in handy with children (and adults) who want to purchase everything they see!
Yes, waiting can teach patience. Waiting can have other benefits such as saving money by delaying a purchase until the item goes on sale. Or perhaps scoring a better job offer by turning down the first offers. There are countless other examples “where it is worth the wait”!
Now enter the reality setting proverb, “There is an exception to every rule.” And this is so true when it comes to proverbs about the virtues of waiting.
Not all waiting is equal nor will waiting always has a positive outcome. It’s annoying to have to wait for another time to make a particular dish because the grocery store is out of an ingredient. But this pales in comparison to the anxiety of waiting weeks for a needed medication to be back in stock at local pharmacies. Or the stress of the long wait times for securing physician appointments, medical testing, and treatments due to healthcare staff shortages.
